The Vocal Coach

Does the idea of having a vocal coach come into your home appeal to you? If so, you might be interested in Vocal Coach Singer. These CDs (or MP3 files) contain 7 training CDs and 4 workout CDs. This product is recommended for older children and adults. If you have younger children then you would want to look at another product they offer called Teaching Kids to Sing.

The Vocal Coach Singer Includes:
7 Training CDs:
  • Getting Started
  • Complete Breathing
  • Complete Warm-Up
  • Complete Tone
  • Complete Expanding Your Range
  • Complete Diction
  • Complete Performance
4 Workout CDs:
  • Daily Workout High Voice 1 & 2
  • Daily Workout Medium/Low Voice 1 & 2
Plus these great educational tools:
  • Guidebook – Full-size Instructional Guidebook to Ensure Success
  • Printable Lead Sheets – each exercise in our course, plus track lists
  • Personal Singer's Journal (Getting Started Journal & Workout Journal) to Track Your Progress
  • Vocal Coach Song Evaluation – Evaluation form to enable you to make more intelligent song selections

Right now, my girls are practicing for their Christmas choir at our church. This resource is helpful in teaching them proper posture and breathing techniques. Each lesson only takes a few moments and it is easy to add it to our homeschooling day. The girls and I gather around my laptop computer and we listen to the lessons together. They have learned the importance of having proper posture when singing (which helps with breath support) and they are also learning a lot about proper breathing techniques. Breathing from the diaphragm does not actually come naturally to many singers. In the lesson "Breathing Begins" the instructor has the student lie flat on the ground and do an exercise to learn to keep the chest and shoulders still while expanding the belly (diaphragm) only. The verbal cues are clear in each lesson and we have never been left wondering what or how to do an exercise. This lesson was less than 10 minutes. Actually, all the lessons we've gone through so far range from about 2-10 minutes. See? It is not an overwhelming activity to add into your day. My girls are 10 and 7-years-old. They are probably on the younger side recommended for this product, but we are a very musical family and I wanted a product that would "grow" with our family's needs. I took voice lessons in high school and my freshman year of college. I have been very impressed with the quality of this product and believe it offers a great alternative to taking voice lessons outside of the home.

The idea of having these on CD format appeal to me because I think they'd be great to pop into the van's CD player when we travel to piano lessons and back each week. We could make Monday afternoon our music day. I'll probably even call it "Musical Monday" because I have a thing for alliterations. First, I need my my techy husband to transfer the MP3 files my daughter's ipod. I'll let him figure it out. But for now, we are enjoying and benefiting listening to the files from my laptop.

Pricing and Ordering Information:
You can purchase Vocal Coach in either CD format ($119.99) or download all the MP3 files ($99.99).

Journeys of Faithfulness

Sarah Clarkson, daughter of Clay and Sally Clarkson, has written a book for young women called "Journeys of Faithfulness." It is a book of stories about the life and faith of five women in the Bible which include Mary, Martha, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Esther, and Ruth. Sarah takes the life of women in the Bible and then sets their story to life for her readers. I think of it has historical fiction and it is enjoyable to linger on familiar women in the Bible and see them brought to life in Sarah's writings. Can't you just see the sibling rivalry between Mary and Martha in this section?

Martha beat the batter as if it were Mary. She glared into her bowl and smacked it on the wooden table and growled under her breath. Left alone, again. Left to cook and tend, to fetch the water and greet the guests. Left by a sister who was forever happy these days, while Martha herself felt only harried...She maintained her household and fed multitudes, and they all, siblings and honored guests alike, pranced about enjoying her the fruits of her labor and never did anyone think what it cost Martha. No one ever saw.

This section draws the reader into the castle where Esther is living and is receiving her daily beauty treatments:

Esther felt that her skin would soon dissolve in the daily salt scrubbings and perfumed soakings that set the cadence of her days. These treatments supposedly cleansed their victims of blemish and sloughing all roughness and stain away. What they really cleansed, thought Esther, was any sense of self.

This book is written for young women (ages 12 and up), but on Apologia's site, they do mention how it would be a lovely book for mothers and daughters to read and discuss together. My oldest daughter will be 10 in just a few days so she is younger than the recommended age, so I read the book aloud to her. Then we discussed the reading, and at the end of the section there are scriptures to look up together, questions to answer, and a few pages reserved for journaling (which we both love).

This book reminded me of Francine River's novellas from her "Lineage of Grace" series. The writings are based on scripture, but both authors definitely use what they know from scripture, historical customs, and then use their imaginations to tell a little more about the women's story from their point-of-view. Sarah's writings made my daughter and I want to read the actual accounts from the Bible to learn more and go deeper for ourselves. In no way are her writings intended to take away, add to, or replace scripture.

My Daughter's Thoughts after reading part one (the first three chapters of the book):
Mary wasn't afraid to sit at the feet of Jesus.
We discussed how Mary knew Jesus loved her and that drew her to sit at his feet.

As a home educating mother who has a daughter who loves to read and write, it gave me great joy to "introduce" my daughter to Sarah Clarkson, a young woman who grew up in a home similar to ours and is now a published author.

Pricing and Ordering Information:
This book is for sale at Apologia's website and is priced at $13.00.
Apologia has many resources available and I would highly recommend anything this company publishes.

Family Time Fitness

Each year I am required by law to provide a portfolio of our learning to be reviewed by a district approved supervisor. In year's past, when I describe our physical education program I say something like, "My children are very active. They spend a lot of time outdoors running, riding bikes and scooters, playing basketball, wiffle ball, and football together. In the winter months they play Wii fit and Wii sports." I was thoroughly convinced that was enough physical activity for them. However, after using Family Time Fitness, I see the importance and value in providing my children with a physical education. They need to learn how to do exercises correctly and work on things like strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility. The best thing about adding Family Time Fitness to our schedule is the fact that it is fun for the entire family and it helps me get a little extra workout in addition to my normal workout routine.

We have done our Family Time Fitness lessons in our basement,

 in our living room,

and outside.

I received the Fitness 4 Homeschool curriculum, Core 1 for children ages 4-13 to review and we've consistently been adding it to our schedule since we started school on August 14th. We started out taking two days to do the physical fitness assessment with our children. I am confident when we test again in the next week or two, our children will be encouraged by their progress. My husband and I knew immediately once we began the assessment that this program was NEEDED in our children's lives. Yes, we are a very active family, and in the past couple years my husband and I have lost a lot of weight because healthy eating and exercise is a part of our lifestyle. However, when you look at your children and realize they don't know how to do a push-up correctly, you realize that there is VALUE in physical education being added to a homeschooler's lifestyle. You can click here to read the scope and sequence of this curriculum.

There are 260 total lessons in this curriculum and they are easy to follow. The PDF lesson plans are formatted nicely (see the layout below), easy to read, and have clickable links to youtube videos for exercise and game illustrations. For instance, if you don't know how to do a stretch called "the bowling ball," you click on the link provided and can watch. It is so great and helpful! You are never left guessing whether or not you are teaching your children incorrect form. Not only do they give you detailed lesson plans, but they also provide one page lesson summaries. I look over the detailed lesson plan and review any exercises, games, or activities I am unfamiliar with. Then I print the 1-page summaries, put them on my clipboard for the week and I'm ready to teach P.E. all week long.

Lesson Layout

Equipment Needed (this is all simple stuff you probably already have around our house like jump ropes, hula hoops, balls, etc...)

Warm Up (3-4 exercises)

Activity/Game Play (3-4 fun and sometimes challenging activities/games)

Cool Down (3 exercises)

Outdoor Activity (an activity to get you outdoors as long as weather permits)

Do you think having your kids go outside and run and play is enough physical education for them? I used to think so until I started using Family Time Fitness. I encourage you to take the time and read more about this program. It is simple to add into your day and you might find yourself getting a little more physically fit along with your children.

Pricing and Ordering Information
This program costs only $57.00. This is not $57/month, this is a one time payment of $57.00.

There are other products available from Family Time Fitness as well.

Dive Into Diversity DVD

I've never met Annie Crawley (a.k.a. Ocean Annie) but I sure do like her. She has a passion for photography and the ocean and she can't help but share what she loves with others. She spent more than 15 years as an underwater photographer, dive instructor, and a boat captain. In her bio, she explains that she desires for children to "dive into their imagination and explore the ocean" with her.

Our family received the "Dive into Diversity" DVD. This DVD teaches children about the variety of sea life and how animals rely upon one another for survival. While watching the DVD, you and your children will take a ride with a submarine pilot to a depth of 1500 feet. You will learn things like what happens on the reef at night, why do crabs have claws, and what eating ice cream and brushing your teeth have in common.

Pricing and Ordering Information for DVDs:
This DVD is priced at $19.95. Click here to to view a sample video and to learn more about this product.
Would you like to have some FREE fun? Check out some free coloring pages on Ocean Annie's website.

Write Shop

You know this is a good product when your reluctant writer asks, "Mom, when are we going to write another story?" My son has always struggled with writing and I'm confident he would tell you he actually hates to write. However, he has grown and matured a lot this year and writing has become easier with a lot of time, instruction, and patience on both our parts. At the beginning of the year we started lapbooking our way through the "Little House on the Prairie" series. I have seen my son's written narrations improve vastly this school year as a result of writing about what we read or lessons we learned from the books. However, I have never been able to get him to write for the sake of fun and creativity. My daughters on the other hand have journals FULL of original poems, stories, and songs. Because of the assistance and ideas I found from Write Shop, my son has ENJOYED writing creative stories and I am tearing up as I type this to share with you.

Proof that my reluctant writer wrote some great stories thanks to Write Shop!

I received Write Shop Primary, Book C to review for the TOS Crew. According to the teacher's manual, this book is recommended for children ages 7-11 who need to learn to:
1) Plan the main ingredients of a story before beginning to write.
2) Ask who, what, when, where, and why in order to add story details.
3) Organize story details.
4) Use descriptive words in his writing.
5) Write a short nonfiction article.
6) Summarize the contents of familiar books.
7) Collect research facts about a particular subject.
8) Write a simple, short report with an introduction, a body, and a closing.
9) Use standard spelling.
10) Check his own work for correct spelling and punctuation.

As I mentioned before, I have two children who love to write and my son is my reluctant writer. When you have a reluctant writer, you have to get involved with them. The teacher's guide puts it this way - "There's no way around it - your involvement with your child during the writing sessions is key to his success!" Some children can write easily, while others struggle. Write Shop will help you teach your child basic writing skills in an encouraging way as you lead by example and guide them.

The teacher's guide also helps you plan your teaching schedule by offering different lesson plan ideas. You may choose whether you want to take 1-3 weeks for each lesson. Once you decide what will work best in your homeschool and with your child - you will be provided with day-by-day instructions.

Some of the ideas in this particular level were a bit childish for my son, so I skipped over them. My son is a no nonsense, black and white kind of kid. If he doesn't see a purpose or value behind doing something he thinks it's a waste of time. The curriculum does a great job helping you to adapt this to multiple levels and we definitely did that. I had all three of my children participating in these writing activities (1st, 3rd, and 4th graders). I think the reason Write Shop worked so well with my son is because we got to sit down one-on-one and brainstorm ideas together. Once he got the who, what, when, where, why/how, and all the story details (beginning, middle, and end) figured out he wasn't afraid to just pick up his pen and begin writing (he had a plan and purpose). He was so proud once he was done and couldn't wait to read his stories to me. In the book they recommend having editing buddies (stuffed animals) for young children, but in my son's case his dad was his editing buddy. My son wrote Army stories and since his dad was in the Army, he thought he would make a great editing buddy (more one-on-one time with a parent).  Again, "There's no way around it - your involvement with your child during the writing sessions is key to his success!" Even though my 3rd grade daughter is more of a natural writer, she also benefited from Write Shop because it helped bring focus to her writing. Her writing has a tendency to go on and on and on and never come to a good conclusion. Her stories now have a good beginning, middle, and end. I often acted as my 1st grade daughter's scribe. Her stories were always her own, but she's not quite ready to do all that writing by herself though.

In the teacher's guide, there is something called a story ideas file box. We tweaked this a bit and cut out pages from magazines and instead of putting them on 3x5 cards, we glued them on paper and stuck them in a 3-ring binder rather than a small file box. When the children don't know what to write about, they can go to the story idea file box (or binder in our house) and look for some inspiration. Here's a picture of all three of my children working hard on their story idea pages.

CapJaxMathFax

Have you heard of Captain Jack? He has developed a simple and fun way for kids to practice their math facts that will motivate and encourage your child. When given this product to review for the TOS Crew, I was thankful because it has come at a perfect time. We are getting ready to wrap up our 2011-12 school year, but I wanted the children to have something to keep practicing their math facts in a fun way in order to keep them sharp and ready to jump into  new math books next school year. CapJaxMathFax is perfect for summer time learning. In just a few minutes each day they can jump on the computer and practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division.

If your children can type their numbers and hit the enter key, then this program will be a breeze for them to practice their math facts on.

Children can either play for practice or for rating. When they play for rating, they will receive positive feedback when they get a new and improved rating.

We have been using CapJaxMathFax in our home for several weeks now with all three of our children and it has been a great tool to keep them practicing and progressing in their math facts.

Amazing Science, Volume 1

As a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, I was given the opportunity to review a product from Science and Math called "Amazing Science, Volume 1." This product is a 2-disk DVD set and covers 23 different science experiments. These DVDs teach fundamental principles of science like electricity, magnetism, heat, temperature, pressure, surface tension, buoyancy, and many more. Each demonstration gives you a visual demonstration (which this visual learner loves), and most importantly it explains the science behind each experiment.

Here are the experiments included in this DVD set:
Color Changing Milk
Egg in a Bottle
Exploring Air Pressure
Build a Lemon Battery
Inverted Cup of Water
Candle Suction Power
Amazing Magnetic Force
Lift an Ice Cube with String
Matchstick Speedboat
Cloud in a Bottle
Reversing an Image With Water
Floating Eggs
Keeping Paper Dry Under Water
Dry Ice Bubbles
Balloon in a Candle Flame
Ocean in a Bottle
Build a Motor with Lights
Simple Lava Lamp
Invisible Ink
Density Tower
Soda Can Fizz
Build a Motor #2

I believe this DVD can be used in two ways. The first way is a teacher can use the DVD to help prep her to teach the lesson, and the second way is to watch with your students, pique their interest and then do the experiments together. I know my children can't wait to actually do many of the experiments we watched together. I wish I could have video recorded their reactions to many of them because they were priceless. They were shocked and amazed by the results of so many of these experiments and it was fun to watch and listen to them!

DVD: $19.95 plus shipping and handling
Download: $17.99 and NO shipping and handling charges

God's Great Covenant, A Bible Course for Children

God's Great Covenant is a Bible course for children (grades 4 and up) published by Classical Academic Press. In this study, your child will take a look at The Gospels and learn how Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. There are four units and 36 chapters in this study.

Unit I: Jesus, the Son of Man, Has Come...To Live Among His People
Unit II: Jesus, God's Servant, Has Come...To Proclaim the Good News
Unit III: Jesus, the Messiah, Has Come...To Teach About God's Kingdom
Unit IV: Jesus, the Son of God, Has Come...To Conquer Sin and Death

As your child works his way through the lessons, a character named Simon acts as sort of a guide and a story teller. Each lesson is divided up into three sections:
1) Memory Page (This page shares the theme, Scripture, Memory passage, key facts to be covered in the lesson, and the prophecy fulfilled).
2) Story Time (This is where Simon shares the lesson in a very conversational way).
3) Worksheets (to review and make learning more concrete)

Pricing and Ordering Information:
The student book costs $26.95. There is also a detailed teacher's book available. The teacher's book includes everything in the student book plus answer keys, teacher's notes, and additional information to dig a little deeper if you or your child desire to do so. Christian Kids Explore Earth & Space

I do not think there is anything from Bright Ideas Press I do not like. I guess their motto is true - they truly do produce "curriculum moms love." Their products are always well done and their customer service is personal and superior. I was pleased to review volume 1 of All American History, from BIP my first year with the TOS Crew, and last year (year two) I had the privilege of reviewing WonderMaps. Year three finds me reviewing Christian Kids Explore Earth & Space.

This curriculum is written by a home educating mom, Stephanie Redmond. So, she understands what it's like to juggle teaching multiple subjects to multiple age groups. She understands that time is critical to many of us and that is why she has tried her best to design this curriculum in a way to make the teacher's life easier. The curriculum is geared towards 3rd-6th graders, but she shares ideas of how to include younger children and also children who need or desire a little more depth. The lessons are thorough, yet concise, and she has conveniently listed all the required outside resources needed for each lesson at the beginning of each lesson so preparations can be made ahead of time.

The author shares what a daily lesson COULD look like when using this curriculum:

Tuesdays:
Memory Work - Review flashcards and vocabulary (5 minutes)
Discuss (review) last lesson (5 minutes)
Teaching Time - Read or have students read new lesson; ask comprehension questions as you go (10 minutes)
Discuss new information (2-3 minutes)

  • This is what I can narration time.

Daily Reading Sheet - Have children complete a Daily Reading Sheet (10 minutes)

  • I think of these as a written narration time for the child

Vocabulary - Have children fill out (or assist them) a vocabulary sheet or make flashcards of the key words in the lesson (10 minutes)
Books - Outside reading time. This is where the children have an opportunity to read more about the lessons and many recommended reading resources are found in this book. (30 minutes or more, as necessary)

Thursdays:
Memory Work
Hands-On Time - Complete a relevant experiment or activity. Student can also use part of this time for working on folderbooks and discovery (research) activities.

The author even explains and gives options on how to construct and organize a science notebook for this course. All reproducible are available in the back of the book to be copied or a downloadable student workbook is available for purchase to make printing straight from your computer more convenient.

Below are some helpful links to help you see what is covered in this book as well as how a sample lesson:

Fabulous Fractions by AIMS Education Foundation

Fabulous Fractions will help you teach your 3rd -5th grade children in a fun and interactive way and as a result the learning becomes more concrete as it is applied to real-life scenarios. Such as how rulers help us learn about fractions and decimals. Through these lessons students learn how to order fractions on a number line (like a ruler), experience addition and subtraction of fractions on a number line, and connect fractions and linear measurements.

I know every teacher is different, but I have a hard time adding these types of books to our current day. However, I think books like these are GREAT for summer time learning. These activities are fun and hands-on and the kids won't even feel like they're doing school. I already have made plans on how to implement one activity from this book each week over our summer break.

Pricing and Ordering Information:
The book costs $21.95 or you can order an e-book in PDF format for $19.95.

The TOS Crew had the opportunity to review various math and science books from AIMS Education Foundation. Please click over to the Crew's blog to read more reviews on this book as well as others.

TruthQuest History Guides

American History for Young Students III is for students in grades 1-6 and covers history from 1865 to 2000. This history guide will help you plan lessons on the Wild West, World War II, the Wright Brothers, the Vietnam War, the tragedy of 9/11, and many more. You can view the table of contents by clicking here and a sample section by clicking here.

Truth Quest is different than most other history curriculum because it helps the learner see God's presence throughout history. Their "motto" is "God initiates...People respond...History happens." This curriculum serves as a guide and offers many suggestions to enrich your studies with literature. At first glance, you might think this curriculum is too easy because it's a lot of reading. You might be saying to yourself something like the author shares in the introduction of this product:

“ OK. So what about Day One. Tell me how I should plan each week. ”Well, that’s up to you. But you mustn’t panic! Remember, this history is a new kind of history. You’ll see that it takes on a life of it’s own. You’ll gather the little kids on the couch to read aloud to them, or you’ll have kids sprawled around (or sitting in an orderly row) as each is absorbed in their books. At dinner time or while driving to piano lessons you’ll have the most fascinating conversations, guaranteed! Older students can more deeply research special topics. Yes, this can be enough. It’s that simple.

How can history lessons take a life of their own?
Children can write reports, give oral reports, build models to show what they've learned, put on skits, notebook, lapbook, sculpt, or paint. The possibilities are endless. A Journey Through Learning has created notebooking and lapbooking products to supplement these guides and can be purchased at TruthQuests' website.

There are writing assignments throughout the guide called ThinkWrite. ThinkWrite 1 for this guide is worded in this way: "Though it may be hard, try to explain why it is so important that we know God created us and the world." Your children will have to go beyond their beliefs and communicate effectively WHY they believe the way they do and I think this is KEY to having rock-solid faith!

If you are not sure how TruthQuest can be used in your homeschool, then click over to read how other families have implemented this resource into their learning. If you are unsure what guide to purchase, you can click here for suggestions.

Pricing and Ordering Information:
There are two options when ordering. You can order a hard copy of the book for $29.95 (plus shipping and handling) or a PDF download which costs $24.95 (zero shipping costs).
There are optional companion resources available for this product. Do you like to lapbook, notebook, or use timelines? If so, you might be interested in these resources you can find by clicking here.

Amazing Animals by Design

Author, Debra Haagen saw a need for young children to have a special book written for them in order to help them understand intelligent design and that is why she wrote Amazing Animals by Design. In this book you will join a young boy and girl while they visit a zoo (meet the characters pictured below).

Their parents talk to them about how and why the animals are designed the way they are. The children discover things like why a giraffe's neck is so tall and why zebras have stripes. Did all these things simply happen by accident?

This book is written for children in the preschool to 3rd grade age-range and can be purchased through Tate publishing in either paperback for $8.99 or ebook format for $7.99. The book officially releases on April 1st and can be then purchased at other retail stores.

I read this book to my 1st and 3rd grade daughters, and both of them enjoyed the characters, story, and illustrations. In my opinion, this book is an all-around good children's book since it offers a total package of a story that teaches a quality lesson and also has captivating illustrations.

An Online Math Tutor Names ALEKS

What is ALEKS? ALEKS stands for Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces. ALEKS is an online program that acts like a math tutor for children in grades 3-12. ALEKS uses artificial intelligence to adapt the questions to discover what a student knows and doesn't know. ALEKS then has a starting point in which to use to perfectly adapt math lessons for each individual student. As a student spends time on the ALEKS site, they will be periodically reassessed to make sure they are retaining what they've previously learned.

Once your child goes through the initial assessment, you can see something ALEKS calls "My Pie." It is divided up into sections and you can see the concepts your child already knows and the concepts they need to learn. From here you can click on the topics and work through the lessons.

Once you click on a topic from the "My Pie" section this is how the questions look. A paper and pencil must be used in order to work out the problems. My children would have preferred to be able to write using the mouse on the computer (think Microsoft Word's paint program). However, they quickly got used to always having pencils and papers nearby when they worked on the ALEKS website.

Our time spent on ALEKS looks like this. First my child logs on and we go through anything they need to review, then they work on some new lessons from their pie, and then they do 10 minutes of Quick Tables (pictured below). Once they complete their 10 minutes of Quick Tables, they earn a few minutes of game time. As they make progress with their Quick Tables, they unlock more and more games. The parent can go in and adjust the amount of Quick Table time. 10 minutes is what is recommended and that is what I stuck with and it worked out well for my children. During their review and "My Pie" lessons I sit right next to them and still act as their instructor as needed. The only time I can walk away from them is when they are doing Quick Tables and of course playing their games. So, if you are wanting a program that does the teaching for you, ALEKS is not it for younger elementary-aged children. When my children didn't understand a new lesson, they could click on an "explain" button. However, we found the long written-out explanations to sometimes be overwhelming to follow and that is why I sat by them during their entire lesson time. I do like the printable worksheets that ALEKS generates based upon the lessons your children have been working on. I live in a state that requires me to compile a portfolio of my children's progress each school year, so the worksheets, and the visual progress charts available to print off are nice features.

In the 4 weeks we've been using ALEKS my children have definitely progressed and learned some new math concepts. I have also clearly seen some gaps in our current math curriculum and have learned a lot as an instructor while using this program.

Screenshot of the Quick Tables. Your child can work on addition, subtraction, or multiplication. Once their predetermined time is complete, they earn a few minutes of game time.

The horse race game is one of several games the children can unlock as they make progress during their quick tables time.

Pricing and Ordering Information:

ALEKS does offer a family discount program. Click here to read more about that.

ALEKS is an excellent and well organized product and the company is very professional. However, I find the pricing for this product for one child to be incredibly expensive, so imagine my fright when I discovered what it would cost to subscribe all three of my children for only one year ($431.88).  For this price, I feel like someone should physically come into my home and teach my children math so I can have a break for one hour each day!

See-N-Spell Can Help a Struggling Speller

When I received this See-N-Spell Quick Reference Guide to review I was really looking forward to giving it a try. The company included a letter in their packet to me and in it they stated:

All people have larger verbal social language vocabulary than they do written academic language vocabulary. When writing, writers often misspell or, to avoid misspelling, choose simpler words that do not clearly express their thoughts or develop their language skills. A common trait of these struggling spellers/writers is that they "trade down" to simpler words to avoid mistakes, thus limiting the growth of their academic vocabulary.

I sat the letter down and wondered if Dr. Sylvia Smith (the person who wrote the letter I quoted above) knew my son! My son can read just about anything you put in front of him and he has an extensive vocabulary. However, when it comes to spelling, he is struggling. My son is a perfectionist, so instead of using a stronger and more difficult word to spell when writing he will "trade down" his words for a word he knows how to spell. I will be honest with you - it has taken persistence on my part to get this child of mine to actually use this guide. But once he has seen the help it is to him - I have caught him looking through it on his own.

See-N-Spell is arranged alphabetically and  helps writers to...
  • Find correct spelling for more than 300 commonly used words.
  • Find the correct spelling for homophones (words that sound alike but are spelled differently).
  • Identify the part of speech these words are so they can be used correctly.
  • Quickly verify the correct spelling of common misspelled words.

See-N-Spell is divided into three alphabetized sections:
1) Most Commonly Used Vocabulary Words
2) Most Commonly Misspelled Words
3) My Special Interest Words

When I first received this I did wonder why this product would be better than simply having my child use a dictionary to look up spelling words? I believe dictionary skills are skills we should still teach our children, but when your child is struggling with spelling, the last thing he wants to do is get a HUGE intimidating book from the shelf and try to find the one word he needs. This guide is not intimidating and it does teach alphabetizing skills. Is every possible word included in this 40-page guide? Of course not, but there is additional space in the back to add your own "special interest words." One word we have already added is turtle. For some reason, my son keeps forgetting the letter e at the end of that word.

Fun Music Lessons for Young Children

KinderBach is a fun, creative, and interactive way for young children to enjoy introductory piano lessons in the comfort of their own home. An expensive grand piano isn't a requirement because a toy keyboard works well with this program.

KinderBach is recommended for children ages 2-7. Each short lesson includes watching playful characters as they introduce music concepts such as rhythm, note reading, singing, and composition. Some lessons include enjoyable printable worksheets like this one:

Within the first month of lessons, your child can be playing real songs like “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and “Happy Birthday!” You can choose the best way to view these lessons either online or by watching DVDs. There is no musical background required in order to effectively use this program with your children. If you own a television or computer, printer, and a toy keyboard then your child can enjoy 22 hours of pure musical enjoyment.

KinderBach is a great and affordable way to get music lessons in at home and all of us busy home educating families know how great it is to be home and not have one more lesson, activity, or errand to run out and do.

Please visit the TOS Crew's blog to read more reviews on KinderBach and you may discover this product would make a great addition to your young child's life.

Family-Friendly Spanish Curriculum

Homeschool Spanish is a R.E.A.L. curriculum for the entire family to enjoy. R.E.A.L is an acronym and it means:
Relax
Enjoy
Aspire
Learn

Doesn't that sound nice? A curriculum that encourages you to relax, enjoy, aspire, and learn TOGETHER as a family!

Our family has been using this curriculum for the past month and we are enjoying it. We are taking it very slowly. We are still working our way through unit one learning all the greetings in Spanish. I just got done serving my children lunch and without any prompting they are saying "Gracias" and I say "De Nada." We are learning to implement what we're learning into normal parts of our day, not just the few moments we spend doing our Spanish lessons.

I received this material to download and the process was simple. I received the book bundle with the daily curriculum guide. I highly recommend purchasing the daily curriculum guide. I'm the type of person who really NEEDS that sort of thing to keep me on track and organized! My children love the audio files, because even though I have a tiny bit of Spanish background (very tiny) they know I sometimes do NOT pronounce things correctly. The sound quality is very good on these files. You can view some sample pages by clicking here so you can get an idea how the curriculum is designed and some of the activity pages included.

Pricing and Ordering Information:
There are two ordering options for R.E.A.L Homeschool Spanish. You can choose to either download the material which is priced at $49.95 or purchase a hardcopy which costs $89.95. You can also order a daily curriculum planning guide for $9.95. This program is geared towards children in grades K-8, but a high school supplement is going to be released soon.

The World's Greatest Stories

George Sarris makes the Bible come alive with his amazing story-telling skills. Our family received the first volume of "The World's Greatest Stories" and these stories are word for word from the Bible and I LOVE that! In this volume we learned about The Blazing Furnace, The Handwriting on the Wall, Daniel in the Lion's Den, Elijah and the Prophets of Baal, and The Prophecy of Jonah.

There are six volumes to choose from and each volume is available in either the NIV or KJV translation.
Volume 1 - The Prophets
Volume 2 - The Life of Christ
Volume 3 - Beginnings
Volume 4 - Joshua and Esther
Volume 5 - Joseph and His Brothers
Volume 6 - Defeating Giants

Pricing and Ordering Information:
Each CD costs $7.95 plus shipping. However, shipping is FREE when you order six more more CDs.

These CDs make great gifts and are also a great item to add to your family's listening library. We love to listen to these types of CDs while drawing, getting ready for bed, or on long road trips.

My Children's Thoughts:
"This can help you learn about things from the Old Testament and it is awesome."

Fun Fraction Card Game

Fractazmic is a card game that helps teach children how to convert and add fractions and also the relationship between fractions and measurements. There are a few different variations of play to help adapt to your child's level.

This card game is for 2-4 players and is recommended for 1st-8th graders because there are multiple variations of this game to adapt the difficulty level. You will see a video I posted below to show you one of the variations to play this game. This game has potential in our family and I am hanging on to it when we get to covering fractions more in-depth. Right now the cards have too many common denominators for us to get going with a quick game. We need to work on fractions a bit more before playing the game will go smoothly like it's intended. Can I just be honest? This game has been good practice for ME! It's true! When you don't use this math skill you are quick to forget and it has been a great review for me as a teacher.

The cards in the deck are:
Sixteenth suit: 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2
Twelfths suit: 1/12, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 5/12, and 1/2
Tenths suit: 1/10, 1/5, 3/10, 2/5, and 1/2

The object of the game is to create as many "hands" as possible before you run out of cards and "hands" are made by adding together the fraction cards within the same suit to equal one whole. The game ends when a player runs out of cards and the winner is the player with the most "hands."

Click this link to go and play an online version of this game.
