Contribution to Society

The other day I received a letter in the mail from Social Security. It was listing all the years I had worked and the amount of money I had invested in Social Security and Medicaid. From 1993-2000 there were all kinds of dollar signs proclaiming the amount of money I had contributed towards my future government retirement program. From 2001-2006 there were only zeroes listed. Why? In 2001 I began a whole new career - the career of being a full-time stay-at-home-mom.

I laughed a little when I read this. It said that as of now, if I do not get anymore “work credits” I will not be qualified for any retirement benefits from Social Security when I am 65, nor will I be able to receive any medical benefits from Medicaid.

Looking at this piece of paper, it may appear to some, I have contributed very little to society. I think differently though. I am home training and teaching three precious children (Pr. 22:6). I pray my three children will be a great gift to society one day. I pray my children will one day be adults who love and fear the Lord. I pray my children will marry godly spouses, and then have godly children together. I pray my children will have hearts to know, love, and serve the Lord more and more each day of their lives. I pray my children will not be ashamed or afraid to tell others about the saving grace of Jesus Christ!
When my days of having children in the home come to an end, perhaps I’ll see how many “work credits” I can squeeze in before I’m 65. But hey, isn’t that about the time I should be getting some grandchildren? Forget that! I’ll simply trust the Lord to take care of my retirement plan! LOL!!!
