I haven't made playdough in years. The children reminded me the last time I made it for them was when we lived in Arkansas, and we haven't lived there since May 2007! So, today was a good day to get out the flour, salt, cream of tartar, and oil and cook a little playdough up on the stove! My 8-year-old daughter, K pretty much did everything by herself.
First you put in 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 1 cup of water, 2 Tablespoons of cream of tartar, and 1 Tablespoon of oil in a pot. Cook this over medium heat until it forms a ball.

When it's done it will look like mashed potatoes.

When it cools a little bit, add your food coloring and mix well. Squeeze that ball of dough until the color is mixed in well. This is a great activity for children who need to work on their fine motor skills!

The only down side to making homemade playdough is your hands will be a different color, but it isn't a permanent change.

The children had a lot of fun making reptiles, people, and other creative creatures.
