Advent

My children are at Grandma's house right now (in another state). So, we will be starting our Advent activities a little late. This year we are going to read Jotham's Journey, A Storybook for Advent by Arnold Ytreeide. This will be our second time reading through this book. The older children enjoyed it the first time, and my youngest child will be able to participate more this year.

Here are a few things we will be doing as we look forward to and anticipate the celebration of our Savior's birth.

Review The Birth of Jesus from our GrapeVine Studies timeline and lesson pages.

Work on our homemade Christmas Cards

Cut down our own Christmas tree and decorate for Christmas

Make Gingerbread Men

Pray for the children who will be receiving the Shoe Boxes we prepared for Operation Christmas Child

Make Christmas goodies for our neighbors and deliver them

Drive around and look at Christmas lights

Learn new Christmas hymns

Children's Christmas Choir at church

Shop or make homemade gifts for Sunday school and AWANA teachers (I would really like to make these...but I haven't decided yet).

What are some things you are going to do as you celebrate the fact that our Savior has COME and He promises to come AGAIN?

Here are two links to blogs I just read and I really like what they have to share:

Good Intentions

I think I'm a blogger who always has good intentions, but I never follow through. It's pathetic. I wanted to take some pictures of the children's Thanksgiving artwork and share some of the things they wrote. But, instead I'm doing laundry, cleaning, wrapping gifts, and packing for a 17 hour road trip. Sometimes I just don't have time for all the things I would like to do.

My husband and I had a great time celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary. Our celebration will carry on though because on December 2nd we are going to NEW YORK CITY!!!!! We are going to see the Radio City Music Hall Christmas show, go ice skating at Rockefeller Plaza, eat at the Cheesecake factory (because neither one of us have ever been there before), and do as much sight seeing as we can squeeze in while we're there. I will definitely follow through and post pics about our trip and share about our experiences while we visit the city for the day.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!
"See" you when we get back home!

10 Years

I can honestly say....

The past 10 years have been the best years of my life.

I love you more today than I did in 1999.

You are my best-friend.

I love it when you make me laugh.

I am absolutely crazy in love with you.

I am glad I said, "I will."

I am thankful to be your wife.

Happy 10th Anniversary, Heath!
I love you!

Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away.

Exploramania / GyMathtics ~ TOS Review

As a member of the TOS Crew, I received a workout DVD called GyMathtics. It's more than an exercise workout, but also a workout for the brain. While the children exercise, they are exposed to 2nd-5th grade math facts.

My 4-year-old preschooler enjoyed doing the exercises and especially giving the "high fives" throughout the workout. But, most of the math concepts were above her head, but it was nice for her to hear them since she is an auditory leaner.

My 7-year-old daughter enjoyed the workout and had fun. Some of the math concepts were below her level, some right on, and of course some were above. But, again it was good for her to be exposed and introduced to the concepts.

My 8-year-old son was not interested in a workout DVD at all. He'd rather go outside and play football or do push-ups and sit-ups in his bedroom.

I think the overall concept of this DVD is terrific. We found the voice overs in the DVD to be a bit "cheesy." The children sometimes got lost on some of the exercises because the exercise part of the screen gets small to make room for the math concepts that are being taught.

I definitely do not think this is a "must have" for every homeschool family, but it is a nice thing to have on hand if the weather outside isn't good for running around and you NEED to have an organized and safe way to allow your children to burn off all the extra energy they seem to obtain during the cold winter months. I also think the DVD is over priced at $24.99.

The DVD has four parts:
1) Shape Stretches - Warm Up
2) Counting Calisthenics
3) Pattern Power
4) Well-Being Wind Down
*My children's favorite parts were the shape stretches and counting calisthenics.

This 30 minute educational workout DVD costs $24.99. Go to Exploramania's website to view other products they sell, and to read about their new DVD that is going to be available soon.

Lesson Plans for Week #14

This is going to be a busy week. We are going to be wrapping up our fun Thanksgiving unit study, my husband and I will be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary, and we will be preparing for some Thanksgiving travels. This means cleaning and packing. Before we leave for a trip I like everything to be clean so we come home to a clean house. This week we will take a break from science, art, and composer studies.
We also have a field trip this week with some of our Learning and Fun Club friends. We are going to have a Thanksgiving feast together and make a craft, and then go to Nixon Park to learn how animals prepare for the winter!
This is what my older two children will be working on this week.
Bible
  • Jesus Storybook Bible
  • Review AWANA verses
  • Family Worship
Math - Living Math Activities
  • Fun review games and activities
Social Studies
  • Thanksgiving Unit Study
  • I'm even going to attempt a lapbook, well my variation of one anyway. I am planning on doing a combination between a notebook and a lapbook.
  • I found a lot of links to great resources over at Jimmie's "Thanksgiving Lapbook" Squidoo page!
  • Baking and decorating Thanksgiving cookies. This will cover math, home-ec, and art:)

Language Arts
  • Copywork - I'm going to start using the children's AWANAverses for their weekly copywork assignments. I want them to truly learn the scripture; not just say it once in their Sparks class and then forget about it.
  • Spelling - All About Spelling.
  • Silent Reading
  • Creative Expression - this will be covered in our Thanksgiving Unit Study.
  • This week's poem is A Thanksgiving by John Kendrick Bangs. You can find it by clicking here along with many other Thanksgiving poems. We read the poem a few times, and the children will choose one of their favorite lines of the poem to copy and then illustrate it.
  • Read-Aloud - Thanksgiving Books and Poems
Music
  • My son is continuing his drum lessons
  • My daughter will continue introductory piano lessons using our three month free trial from KinderBach that has been given to TOS Crew members! She started this last week and she thinks it's a lot of fun!
This is what my preschooler will be doing this week.
(This week my preschooler will probably just do the Thanksgiving activities with us and help us with housework and packing. She loves to be mommy's little helper and I'm so thankful).
Working on matching uppercase with lowercase letters, and putting letters in abc order.
Identifying numbers, counting, calendar time, and putting numbers in order.
She joins us for read-alouds, fun fall activities, art, and Bible time.
She will also be joining us for our Thanksgiving unit study.
What do you have planned this week? Are you doing any special studies for Thanksgiving? Do you type or write out goals or lessons for each week, or do you just "wing it"?

AVKO ~ TOS Review

As a member of the TOS Crew, I received a one year membership to AVKO. AVKO is a non-profit organization that helps parents and teachers teach dyslexic students how to read, spell, write, and type. Many people give testimonials that whether or not you have a child who struggles with dyslexia, AVKO has a lot to offer you and is a sound reading, writing, and spelling program.

I had never heard of AVKO before until I received this free online membership. Navigating around their website was confusing and I struggled finding resources that I believed would be a great benefit for our family. But, if you have a child who struggles with with dyslexia, or you think your child may have dyslexia, a look around this website might give you some answers you've been looking for. Take a look at the freebies they offer on their site.

Here are some of the things included in a membership with the AVKO Foundation
  • $25/year
  • Access to Members Only site
  • 25% discount on all AVKO printed materials
  • Hundreds of dollars worth of free e-books (PDF format)
  • Newsletter
  • Access to recordings of Don McCabe's workshops in mp3 format
  • worksheets, activities, and more to supplement your curriculum
If you are currently using curriculum offered through AVKO, I would encourage you to take a look at the benefits of online membership. If you have a dyslexic child and they do not seem to be making any progress, then please take a moment and look around this foundations' website. Read some testimonials while you're there.

This is week #3 (I think) of our transition to living math. This definitely takes a lot more work on my part, but it is worth it and so much more fun!
  • Telling Time to hour and half hour
  • Place value activities (using dimes and pennies for ones and tens)
  • Adding 10 to a number
  • Fractions (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16)

  • Read-Aloud - We didn't start "Peter Pan" last week like I hoped. So, we will DEFINITELY start it this week. The children aren't excited about it. They think since they've watched two different versions of the movie that the book will be boring. I think they're in for a pleasant surprise!

Music and Composer Study
  • Still studying Mozart
  • We will work on a timeline of Mozart's life similar to this one.

This is what my preschooler will be doing this week.
Working on matching uppercase with lowercase letters, and putting letters in abc order.
Identifying numbers, counting, calendar time, and putting numbers in order.
She joins us for read-alouds, fun fall activities, art, and Bible time.

America's Heritage: An Adventure in Liberty ~ TOS Review

The American Heritage Educational Foundation (AHEF) is a non-profit, non-partisan educational foundation committed to teach our nation's history from four valuable themes: freedom, unity, progress, and responsibility. The creators of this resource state: A nation built on these ideas and theories cannot possibly survive if those same philosophical and historical principles are not studied, taught, learned, practiced, and reinforced in our schools and institutions attended by the next generation of young people. Click here to read more on why our country's survival is in mortal danger.

This is a FREE resource that provides supplemental material to enhance lessons for students in elementary, middle school, and high school levels. As a member of the TOS Crew, I received the CD from AHEF to test out and use with my family.

The elementary lessons include these topics:
  • Colonial America
  • Declaration of Independence
  • A Famous Signature
  • George Washington
  • U.S. Presidents
  • The Great Seal
  • Thanksgiving
  • The United States Flag
  • The Star Spangled Banner
  • The National Motto
  • The Statue of Liberty
  • The Pledge of Allegiance and Creed
  • America The Beautiful
  • What is an American?
Recently, I printed out the lesson on The United States Flag. Each lesson states the purpose, objective, theme (freedom, unity, progress, or responsibility), core knowledge, time it will take to complete the lesson, materials required, and what you need to do in order to prepare for the lesson. In this lesson the children will learn about the symbolism of the flag's colors, flag code, design their own flag for their family/school, discuss, and journal about what they've learned. As we progress through our study of American History, this resource will be a wonderful addition to our studies.

This resource comes in CD-Rom format and is a free educational resource. You do have the option to purchase a printed version of this resource for $19.50 for each level (elementary, middle, or high school). Click here to order American Heritage supplemental curriculum today.

Nature Study

Earlier this week we went out for a nature walk around our yard and our neighbor's too. We wanted to find some pretty leaves to make a fall wreath. That didn't happen. The trees around us have huge, brown, crumbly leaves. Oh well, maybe next year! But, we did enjoy finding a nice, fuzzy caterpillar to observe and play with.

I was delighted when our nature walk and study turned into a very productive time of yard work. My daughters and I worked hard to bag up all the leaves. My youngest daughter got bored and distracted quickly, and her older sister told her, "L if you don't work, you don't eat!" I laughed out loud at that one. She's heard me say that many times! But, I cringed at the tone in her usual sweet voice. She has heard that forceful tone from me. They learn the good and bad from us, don't they? This proves once again that children really do listen to you when you speak.

2 Thessalonians 3: 10
For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."

Keep working, girls. Supper is at 5!

Still Life Portrait

We are still using Artistic Pursuits, and this week the children did a still life portrait. My son is usually not EXCITED about art, but this week he really got into it. I let the children arrange anything they wanted for a still life portrait. He said he wanted a bouquet of flowers, but all our flowers are dead. So, we went outside and snapped off a couple colorful small branches from a tree in our front yard, stuck them in a vase, and put a small gourd next to it. The gourd is special to my little man because he grew it himself in our garden!

He sketched the design with a pencil first, then colored it with watercolor crayons, and then "painted" it with water to make it look like a painting. We LOVE watercolor crayons! They are so much fun! They do break easily though, but that doesn't stop us from continuing to use them.

Here's the finished product! I am so PROUD of him! He did a great job! I love how he worked to blend different colors together!

Bright Ideas Press ~ TOS Review

For two months, our family has been studying All American History, Volume 1 by Celeste W. Rakes. This curriculum is offered by a very well known publisher to many in the homeschool community, Bright Ideas Press. All American History is written for grades 5-8, but we have been successfully adapting it for 2nd grade. The teacher's book is full of wonderful and creative ideas to adapt this curriculum for younger children, which include things like book lists and family activities for each lesson.

We are an eclectic homeschool family who is strongly influenced by the Charlotte Mason method of education. At first glance, you would not immediately think this history curriculum would be a good fit for our family, but we have enjoyed using it as the foundation of our study of history this year. We are using the textbook as a guide, and reading any type of literature we can find at our local library to enhance and add life to our lessons, because the text book is written above our children's grade level. I do use the text book when I can't find anything at the library . I will often times read it quickly, and narrate it back to the children on their level. My oldest son enjoys looking at the pictures and the maps in the text book also.

We update our timeline with each lesson, do oral narration, draw pictures of ships, and other events, trace explorer's routes on a map, and make our own maps. The student activity book has a page for each key person you are studying. For instance, when we studied Prince Henry the Navigator we cut out a flag of the country he was born, a flag of the country he explored for, and a picture of him. The children glued these items to the appropriate places on their notebook pages. Then they filled out information about Prince Henry such as when he was born, when he died, and where he explored. We are beginning to have a nice looking Social Studies notebook! When the children are older and we re-use this curriculum, I will require them to do more than the fill-in-the blank forms included in the student activity book. They will be required to do their own written narration about what they've learned.

I look forward to going through this entire curriculum with the children. When we complete it we'll put it on our shelf for a while, and pull it down to go through again in a few years and dig even deeper. The teacher's guide is full of wonderful ideas to further your family's study.

The curriculum comes as either a packaged set, or you can purchase the books individually.

All American History Set (All 3 books included) $68.00

Student Reader (Hardcover, 443 pages) $44.95

Student Activity Book (soft cover, perfect bound, 3-hole punched and perforated, 312 pages) $16.95

Teacher Guide With Answer Key (Soft cover and a must have to use the program, especially if you desire to adapt this for younger children, 268 pages). $18.95

Volume 1 covers the age of European exploration through 1840.
Volume 2 is also available and covers the civil war through the early 21st century.

Go to the Homeschool Crew Blog to read more reviews on other products from Bright Ideas Press.
