Tektoma is a company that puts together tutorials for kids (ages 7-17) to teach them how to make their very own computer games. Because the tutorials must be downloaded, there are some requirements for your computer and those requirements are Windows XP or Vista, broadband Internet connection, and you will also need to install GameMaker software (the lite edition is available for free). If you are a Mac user, Tektoma is working on Mac versions and they will be available soon.
Tektoma costs $14/month or $140.00/year. You will have access to all the available tutorials. Tektoma also offers a free 14 day trial period. So, you can give this a try before you decide to purchase a membership to the site.
My older two children are ages 8 and 7. We gave this a shot, but didn't get very far with it. Honestly, if Dad could sit down with them instead of me, I'm sure they would have gotten much farther. My son is hoping to be able to work through this with his Dad over our Christmas break. My TOS Crew First Mate shared in her review how her 14-year-old son worked through the tutorials totally on his own. So, if you are willing to walk through this with younger children it could be a lot of fun. If you have older children (ages 12-17) they will probably be able to work through the tutorials independently.
If you think anyone in your home would enjoy learning more about how to make their very own computer games, then take a moment and check out all Tektoma has to offer.
