Wrapping Up Week #8

On Sunday, T had another football game, and K and L started AWANA at our church.

We discovered a website that is a lot of fun to practice math facts, and the children enjoyed taking turns each day.

L is moving forward with her reading lessons, and we're still practicing word families and spending time using alternate readers rather than what she calls, "The yellow book" (How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons).

T and K have wrapped up their study in the Incas this week, and they also finished their independent reading book - Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims. This time I have required them each to do a book jacket book report. We started them yesterday, and the children will finish them on Monday. This is what we have so far. First, I glued two pieces of paper together with a glue stick so it wouldn't be so wet.

Then I actually folded it over the book to use as a guide for the folds.

I put the instructions on sticky notes explaining to the children what to do for the front cover, inside jacket, back jacket, and back cover.

Front cover: Illustrate a cover for your book jacket that will describe the story. Include the title and author of the book.
Front jacket: Describe the main character.
Back jacket: Describe the setting of the book.
Back cover: Write a summary of the story.

These are the covers the children designed on Thursday:

Today (Friday) was a fun field trip day! We went to a local park and had a picnic, flew kites, and climbed on some rocks!
